General Roberts is a member of the Society of Cincinnati and the Sons of the American Revolution. He is a descendant of Colonel George Gibson, one of General George Washington’s Commanders at Valley Forge.
General Roberts is standing beside the monument of his ancestor, Maj. Gen. George C. Gibson (1783-1861), at Congressional Cemetery. Gen. Gibson served throughout the War of 1812, with Gen. Andrew Jackson in the Florida campaigns, and throughout the Mexican War. He was appointed quartermaster-general in 1816 and served in that position for more than 50 years. President Lincoln and Gen. Winfield Scott, among others, attended Gen. Gibson's funeral.

General Robert's father, Major James M. Roberts (1887-1966), served in France in World War I. He was Regimental Adjutant, March-May 1919 and Commanding First Battalion, May-June 1919.
